Sept. movie catch-up: Drive-In Night

CHILLERAMA (2011)

Love this poster! Went to see this premiere at the Midway Drive-In, thanks to Chicago’s Flashback Weekend convention runners. It was a blast because several of the directors were there and I think I prefer seeing horror movies at the drive-in even over an old movie house. Even when it tends to be 40 degrees at night, hells yeah - I’m there! :D

Unfortunately, only half of this anthology was good. I *completely* dug Adam Rifkin’s “WADZILLA,” which had high influences of KILLER CONDOM and even Henenlotter’s recent BAD BIOLOGY. It’s beyond offensive, raunchy and vile, but it was cheerfully hilarious and entertaining. Just plain nuts.

While I’ve adored everything else they’ve done, I was pretty disappointed with both Tim Sullivan and Adam Green’s entries. These two have such high comedic potential that wasn’t actualized very well within these shorts. I was bored to tears most of the time, which kind of sucks because I normally do enjoy most of their output.

The final entry, Joe Lynch’s “ZOM B MOVIE,” was also quite entertaining, albeit stark-raving mad! Bit confusing at times, but the level of insanity won me over. I also really dug the sheer amount of cameos going on.

2,001 MANIACS (2005)

Since Tim Sullivan was in attendance at the Chicago CHILLERAMA premiere at the drive-in, his 2,001 MANIACS was screened afterwards. Folks are polarized on this one, but I always found it kind of fun. Nice to see Sullivan actively interacting with fans all night long.
